Chief Selector Agarkar explains why Iyer was chosen

Shreyas Iyer’s inclusion in India’s team for the forthcoming 3-match ODI series against Australia, which begins Friday in Mohali, came as a surprise. The right-handed hitter reported last week having a back spasm, and as a result, he was unable to play in India’s Super Four match against Pakistan. The same problem prevented him from taking part in the next match against Sri Lanka, and finally he was unable to attend the following two contests as well, including the championship match against the co-hosts, which India won by a score of 10 wickets.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-190319″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-katrina-kaif-according-to-vicky-kaushal-is-his-most-brutal-critic-1655570698-shrey-750×422.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com katrina kaif according to vicky kaushal is his most brutal critic 1655570698 shrey” width=”1479″ height=”832″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-katrina-kaif-according-to-vicky-kaushal-is-his-most-brutal-critic-1655570698-shrey-750×422.jpg 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-katrina-kaif-according-to-vicky-kaushal-is-his-most-brutal-critic-1655570698-shrey-768×432.jpg 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-katrina-kaif-according-to-vicky-kaushal-is-his-most-brutal-critic-1655570698-shrey-390×220.jpg 390w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-katrina-kaif-according-to-vicky-kaushal-is-his-most-brutal-critic-1655570698-shrey-150×84.jpg 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-katrina-kaif-according-to-vicky-kaushal-is-his-most-brutal-critic-1655570698-shrey.jpg 1000w” sizes=”(max-width: 1479px) 100vw, 1479px” title=”Chief Selector Agarkar explains why Iyer was chosen 3″>

Iyer’s health was briefly discussed by head selector Ajit Agarkar at a news conference on Monday, and the 28-year-old was said to be fully fit to be chosen in the team for the Australia ODIs.

He hasn’t developed a stress fracture, or otherwise he wouldn’t be on the team. Whether he’s hitting or fielding, he’s great. He is currently healthy, which is why we chose him for the squad. We’re crossing our fingers that he makes it through all three games,” Agarkar remarked.

He put in a lot of effort over the course of several months to get to this point and become fit. He was fortunate that it wasn’t a serious injury, although he did develop a niggle. He’ll have to complete these challenges, and we have faith that he will. He is OK right now,” he continued.

Iyer hasn’t had it easy during the previous 7-8 months. He missed the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad due to a stress fracture in his back. He missed the whole Indian Premier League (IPL), the World Test Championship Final, and the West Indies trip because he had to undergo surgery.

Iyer played the first two games of the Asia Cup 2023 before being again disqualified after spending days at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) practicing in match simulations.
