<p>After the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) 141st session in Mumbai on Sunday, the LA organizing committee will formally declare their choice.</p>
<p>Cricket has only ever been played in the Olympics once, in 1900, when England and France competed in a single game for the gold medal. A T20 men’s and women’s competition, similar to the one that took place at the just finished Asian Games, will reportedly take place in LA in 2028.</p>
<p>The judgment, however, pleased the International Cricket Council (ICC). “We are thrilled that LA28 have recommended cricket for inclusion in the Olympics,” ICC Chairman Greg Barclay remarked. Even if this is not the final decision, it is a major step toward the return of cricket to the Olympics after more than a century.</p>
<p>“I’d like to thank LA28 for their support during the new sport evaluation process over the last two years, and we look forward to the final decision being taken at the IOC Session, in India, during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next week,” the speaker said.</p>
<p>Cricket was featured on the list of sports to be included in LA after a two-year process, during which the ICC collaborated closely with LA28, and it will now be presented to the IOC for approval.</p>
<p>The LA 2028 organizing committee’s decision put an end to rumors that cricket will rejoin the Olympic fold, which would enable the ICC to expand its reach into non-cricketing areas, particularly in Europe. Although the game is well-liked throughout Asia as a whole and on the subcontinent, the just finished Asian Games provided a peek of how the game has expanded across Asia.</p>
<p>The IOC’s decision to hold its meeting in New Delhi for the first time since 1983 is another indication of the country’s growing importance to the Olympic organization.</p>
<p>Given that the 2032 Olympics will be hosted in Brisbane, where cricket has a sizable fanbase, particularly in the Trans-Tasman area, its participation in the Los Angeles edition may also pave the way for a more lasting run.</p>
<p>The Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi diasporas have allowed the ICC to significantly expand its market penetration for cricket in the US. India’s West Indies trip over the last five to six years hasn’t been complete without a few T20 Internationals played in the US. In addition, the West Indies and the US have been given joint hosting rights for the T20 World Cup in 2019.</p>
<p>In addition to cricket, baseball/softball, which was a part of the Tokyo Games in 2021 but was absent from the schedule in Paris the following year, is expected to return. Squash, which had long been on the edge of Olympic participation, has also got approval from the LA committee.</p>
