Beyond Power & Pleasure: The Evolving Perception of Politics as a Tool for Social Betterment.

Pawan Singh Chauhan Member of Legislative Council Lucknow:

Politics is considered to be the supreme means of serving the nation. It is perceived from various perspectives by the enlightened members of society. Until recently, people viewed politicians merely as individuals driven by the desire for power and pleasure. However, many now believe that politics is always dedicated to the upliftment of all sections of the society.

I personally know many prominent politicians who  after achieving success in their respective fields chose to serve through politics. It cannot be denied that leadership is capable of bringing respect, prosperity, education, health, and security to any country. Regardless of individual capabilities, personal prosperity can be fleeting if governance is not in the right hands.

In countries like Afghanistan and Iraq, we often hear through the media about intellectuals abandoning everything and seeking refuge in other nations. However, a country with capable leadership ensures not only the departure of the affluent and enlightened but also provides opportunities for the poor, marginalized and oppressed to live with security and dignity.

Recently, we witnessed the fortunate return of Indian students stranded in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, a testament to the skilled leadership of the Indian government. Such instances, where two hostile nations temporarily halt war for the sake of a country’s students, are rare. When leadership and politics embody sacrifice, asceticism and dedication to the nation, the citizens of such countries receive global respect.

India is fortunate to have leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who consider politics as a means of service. We often think that those involved in politics are living lavishly with power, influence, and money. However, we may not realize that those we see enjoying complete prosperity through politics also rely on other means for their livelihood.

From my experience, I can say that thousands of politicians associated with my party depend on various other sources for their livelihood, not just politics. They contribute a significant portion of their income to serve the people through politics. When in politics, one must be mindful of the fact that followers, numbering in the thousands, millions or even billions, observe and emulate the character and behavior of their leaders.

In the Bhagavad Gita, there is a beautiful verse:

“Whatever action a great man performs, common men follow. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues.”

I invite all the youth and women as well as those who consider themselves enlightened individuals to engage in politics for the service of society and the nation. The more the number of good people in politics, the faster the trust of citizens and the progress of the nation will occur.
