In Tuscany, Paulo Dybala’s hat-trick lifts Roma as Lazio stumbles

In Monday’s 3-2 Serie A victory against Torino, Paulo Dybala earned his first hat-trick while wearing a Roma shirt, maintaining the capital city team’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. However, Lazio faltered in Tuscany and lost 2-1 against Fiorentina, squandering the opportunity to cut the distance between themselves and their local rivals. With 44 points, Roma is in sixth place, four points behind Bologna, who hold the last Champions League spot. Fiorentina passes Lazio, which drops to ninth place, and moves up to seventh place, three points behind Roma.

Chris Smalling, an English defender, made his Roma debut after almost six months away.

Day after day, however, former Juventus striker Dybala was at his best as the Romans defeated Feyenoord to reach the Europa League round of 16.

“The champion’s skill was shown. Roma coach Daniele De Rossi said, “I think players like Paulo should never be questioned because they are decisive.”

“We knew that it would be tough after the hard work on Thursday.”

In a close match at the Stadio Olimpico, Dybala opened the scoring three minutes before halftime with a goal from the penalty spot.

Two minutes later, Duvan Zapata gave Torino new life, heading into goal to keep the visitors in the match at the half.

After 57 minutes, Dybala saved the day once again by curling in a second and completing his hat-trick 12 minutes later thanks to some excellent work from Romelu Lukaku, the replacement.

It was Dybala’s eighth career hat-trick and his first for Juventus in the Champions League since October 2018.

With two minutes remaining, Dean Huijsen unintentionally put the ball in his own goal, setting for a dramatic finish.

However, after their agonizing 4-2 loss to leaders Inter Milan two weeks before, De Rossi’s team managed to hold on for back-to-back victories.

“Of course we could have suffered less, there are games to kill off, we could have managed it a little better until the end, but I’m satisfied, I saw good things,” De Rossi said.

Fiorentina, however, missed a penalty and rattled the woodwork three times before coming from behind to defeat Lazio.

After forty-five minutes, Lazio took the lead thanks to a goal from Luis Alberto, but eight minutes later, Michael Kayode and Giacomo Bonaventura equalized with two goals each.
