Dharamsala Test: Kuldeep Yadav wreaks havoc as England collapse for 218 on his return to his debut venue

It seems that Kuldeep Yadav has a unique bond with this HPCA stadium. Seven years ago, Kuldeep made his Test debut at the same location; coincidentally, it was also in March. In the first innings of their match against Australia, Kuldeep had claimed four wickets.

In the fifth and final Test of the series, India defeated England thanks to a five-wicket opening day performance from Kuldeep, who had only hosted one other Test match at the venue.

Ben Stokes, the captain of England, described the surface as a “belter” the night before the Test. But since the English hitters were thoroughly outclassed by India’s bats, it seemed that the visitors had miscalculated the playing conditions.

Kuldeep (5/72), Ravindra Jadeja (1/17), and Ravichandran Ashwin (4/51) are the spin three. In just 60 overs, England gave up for 218.

When India batted, the surface seemed to be quite different, and the hosts responded forcefully to reduce the majority of the gap. With openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal hitting fifty runs each, the hosts amassed 135/1 in 35 overs.

fading away

India’s bowlers produced an incredible recovery, despite England having a commanding lead at 175/3. Kuldeep deserves special recognition for using fly and drift to secure his fourth five-wicket haul. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, two new-ball bowlers, benefited from the little breeze blowing at the stadium. However, England’s opening batsmen made it through the first round of intense swing bowling.

But when Kuldeep gained control in the eighteenth over, things started to turn around. Kuldeep’s flying was rewarded when Ben Duckett’s misplayed hit was collected by a diving Shubman Gill, after two fours.

With his second delivery of the day, he might have dismissed Zak Crawley (79 off 108), but India chose not to request a review for a catch. But in the end, Kuldeep delivered a terrific ball that struck Crawley in the leg-stump.

Kuldeep grabbed googlies from Stokes (0), Jonny Bairstow (29), and Ollie Pope (11), who is playing in his 100th Test match. Jadeja caught Joe Root (26), and England found themselves at 175/6 all of a sudden.

In his 100th Test match, Ashwin showed no mercy as the seasoned off-spinner destroyed the tail, taking the wickets of Ben Foakes (24) and James Anderson (0) in the same over to end the England innings.

powerful beginning

India benefited greatly from the ball, while the English bowlers had little assistance. As the sun started to drop, the circumstances shifted. Sharma and Jaiswal, the openers, got off to a quick start. The captain scored an undefeated fifty-two, and Jaiswal made seventy-seven before being removed by Foakes off Shoaib Bashir. In only his ninth Test match, the left-hander achieved the 1000-run milestone.
